Fitness, Exercise and Surviving Cancer

Being diagnosed with cancer can be devastating, and enduring through the various treatment regimens can sap the will and strength of even the hardiest of souls. The important thing to remember if you have been diagnosed, whether with mesothelioma, lymphoma or any other type of cancer, is to keep mentally grounded on wellness. This psychological aspect of patient response to treatment is well represented in medical literature, and the efficacy of having a positive frame of mind in treatmentoutcomes cannot be overstated.

Another crucial aspect of surviving cancer that has been shown to be very effective is for patients to engage in fitness training. The latest research clearly indicates that exercise for cancer patients may help them to overcome the deleterious effects of treatment. It seems odd that research is needed to confirm what common sense should tell us.

Obviously a stronger, leaner and fitter body is more apt to overcome trauma and heal more quickly than one that is not, but Science works on facts, and the evidence is abundantly clear that exercise and eating right can not only help to prevent cancer in the first place, but can help patients overcome treatment effects and prevent cancers from recurring.

Recent clinical trials suggest that women who exercise after completing breast cancer treatment live longer and have less cancer recurrence, as do colorectal cancer survivors and those who have undergone mesothelioma treatment. Exercise benefits cancer survivors in the same ways as other adults, and can also have added benefits specific to cancer patients’ situations by improving mood and feelings of well-being, boosting self-confidence and reducing the fatigue that is so often an issue for those undergoing cancer treatments.

These little boosts in feelings of well being, mood and self-confidence can be key in maintaining the positive frame of mind so essential in responding well to treatment and overcoming cancer. Research shows that after a cancer diagnosis people tend to slow down physically as stress, depression and fatigue from the disease and its treatment take their tolls on the body and mind. The natural response to fatigue and depression is to rest and take it easy, but the consensus of the medical community is that cancer patients and survivors should avoid inactivity as much as possible.

Before starting a moderate to vigorous exercise program always consult your doctor to ensure that the fitness program you choose is the right one for you and your situation.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the return of HalloBoobies!

posted by:

It is almost the greatest time of the year. No, not Christmas, OCTOBER. Why is October so special?

Because it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month! That time of the year where everyone comes together like the best bra you’ve ever owned to support the boobies of women (and men) everywhere!

And the best part is, there are so many ways you can get involved!

The National Race for the Cure

Every year the people at Susan G. Komen hold the Race for the Cure and is the worlds largest and most successful fundraising event to benefit Breast Cancer research and support.

To find a local event near you click here.

The Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

Avon will be holding a 2 day, 39 mile walk this October in both Charlotte, and New York. The money raised will support breast cancer screening for both men and women, and treatment, regardless of the patients ability to pay.

To find out more click here.

Susan G. Komen 3 day for The Cure

This is a 60 mile 3 day walk that helps the fight against breast cancer by raising money and offering a great community of survivors and supporters.

If you want to more info click here.

So many other ways to participate!

If you can’t join in any events for any reason there are so many other wys you can participate in Breast Cancer Awareness month. Something as simple as buying a pink ribbon pin (I like this one), click for the cure every day (and tell your friends to as well), or even hold a Pink Party, and raise money to donate to your fave breast cancer charity!

Every little thing helps, and it all adds up to something BIG!

But wait… there’s more…

Yep more, and it’s so exciting I had to save it till last…

We are holding another #HalloBoobies competition this year!!!!

If you weren’t around for our last HalloBoobies contest you can check out the old post here.

Basically your mission is to give your cleavage a Halloween costume. Dress ‘em up anyway you like, (the more creative the better) and send a picture of it over to us! Either post it on your twitter and tell us by sending an @ to @boobiewed and include the hashtag #halloboobies -OR- email it to us at boobiewed@yahoo.com -OR- shoot it over to us at our Facebook page.

You can enter once a week. we will start taking entries on the 29th of September, and the comptetion will close on the 26th of October. Weekly entries will run from Thursday morning to Tuesday evening, winners will be picked on Wednesday. We will also be announcing the grand prize winner on 2nd of November.

Now, I know you’re all asking, what’s the prize? We will be giving away a weekly prize courtesy of Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino and we’ll also be giving away a grand prize from our very own Boobie Wednesday store!

We will accept entrants from all over the globe, but we can only ship weekly prizes to residents of the US  (sorry everyone else), but we will ship the grand prize anywhere in the world, so make sure you still submit your entries!!

We’re really looking forward to this years competition, and we hope you are too! Make sure you spread the word! And don’t forget to give your boobies a feel so cancer won’t steal ;)

The Facts… About the Twitter hype of @Boobiewednesday vs @BoobieWed

posted by:

Listen up, lovelies. I’ve got some things to share with you.

I have debated telling you this story. See, I’ve been taught that if you are wrong then you have no defense, but if you are right, then you have nothing to defend. Right or wrong, V. and I both feel that it’s necessary to explain our side of things. So here is the story, our side of the story.

Let’s start with the facts. Just under a month ago, V., the founder of @boobiewed on Twitter, became aware of a Twitter account named @boobiewednesday. The bio stated that these people were the founders of Boobiewednesday.

V. is one of the two original @boobiewed founders still running the team, though there are various people, me being one of them, that help her. She has worked very hard, over the past two years, to build and grow this organization. And in my opinion, it’s been a great success.

We are currently sponsored by several companies for fund raisers, which allow us to donate monies to various breast cancer charities. There’s a Boobie Wednesday Facebook where we post much of what is posted on Twitter. There is a café press store where we sell boobiewed and breast cancer awareness goods, and all those proceeds are also donated to various breast cancer charities. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we’ll be selling Boobie Wednesday Girls and Guys trading cards. Again, all proceeds will be sent to various breast cancer charities. And finally, there is our website: www.boobiewednesday.org. The Boobie Wednesday team invites cancer survivors, family members and supporters to send in stories in regards to all different types of cancer, to be posted on the site.

V. was completely shocked when she became aware of the other page and she contacted me immediately. I am sure you can all understand her confusion and upset over this. How could this be happening? Why would someone do this? And honestly, it never occurred to any one of us that we should set up a second account for the sole purpose of securing the full non-abbreviated version of the Boobiewed name. We contacted the other users of this page and asked them to please change their name. They refused. Unfortunately some words were exchanged within the general time line on Twitter. You must understand, this is more than just a Twitter account. This is more than just a bit of laughs, where we occasionally talk about spreading breast cancer awareness, and this is certainly more than just a boob contest.

This is the heart and soul of two women who got together to start something different. They worked hard, and they have been successful. It is not okay to have another group of ladies decide to poach a name because it’s available, claim to be the founders, go on their merry way….then defend their actions as “All in the name of charity.”

We were called names and hammered almost daily. We’ve been labeled bullies for ganging up on the UK Boobiewednesday page. One person even called us “Yanks.” What does that mean exactly? How did this turn into a war between the US and the UK? The simple answer to that question is: it’s not. This has absolutely nothing to do with country or city or state or any other political nonsense. It has to do with integrity.

In any event, this was the stuff we were seeing and I tell you, it was damn hard not to rip some people’s heads off in the stream.  And there were times when we did. We feel this was inappropriate on our part. We aren’t bullies, and those tweets have been deleted. We offer our sincerest apologies to our followers and supporters for any unseemly behavior you may have witnessed from anyone on the BoobieWed team. We would much rather have behaved with grace and dignity.

So, I’ll ask you all: Is there that little integrity left in the world that all of the sudden it’s okay to take an organization’s name and ride on its coat tails? Is it okay for me to steal a car and then donate it to charity? I still stole the car, didn’t I? Does it somehow become less of a crime because I donated the car to charity? No, it doesn’t. It’s still wrong.

Boobiewednesday/Boobiewed is an established organization. It is protected under copyright laws and is in the process of obtaining a Trade Mark. We had to file a complaint with Twitter and after several rounds of correspondence they made the other gals close their account and pick a new name.

We will never quite understand why these ladies, who claim to want to spread awareness and get their message out there, decided they could use our name. Why not just pick your own name?  Or better yet, why not just reach out to us and see if we were interested in partnering–we would welcome the help. We work with many of the cancer pages on Twitter and Facebook. We support and RT their tweets and re-share their posts. We would have gladly supported this addition to the awareness family.

We certainly were not looking to start some sort of war. We simply wanted to protect what we have worked so hard for. I don’t think that is such a bad thing.

One of our loyal followers said it best:

I want to offer a huge Thank You to our loyal followers and supporters who have stuck by us and defended us throughout this episode. We truly appreciate you all! I’d like to now ask you all to leave the other group alone. You’re loyalty is appreciated, but its time to put this to rest.

We’d like all of us to move on now and we wish the other group much luck in bringing about awareness.

Thanks.

V. and WookiesGirl.

Standing in line.. waiting for my next step

posted by:

Ok, I saw the breast cancer doctor last week. This is her.  http://utmc.utoledo.edu/physicianapp/physingle.jsp?ID=495

She’s great. Honest and straight to the point. My Boyfriend Tim said she reminded him of Dr.House with the way she walked in with a plan and laid it out for me. I answered so many questions on my history i don’t think i’ll ever forget the dates of my previous surgeries or medical history.

This is what i have-

What is ductal carcinoma in situ?

One out of every five new breast cancer diagnoses each year is ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). This is an uncontrolled growth of cells within the breast ducts. The phrase “in situ” means “in its original place.” This cancer is noninvasive and has not yet made it to breast tissue outside of the ducts.

Ductal carcinoma in situ is the earliest stage at which breast cancer can be diagnosed. It’s known as Stage 0 breast cancer. The prognosis for women diagnosed with this form is excellent. The vast majority of cases of ductal carcinoma in situ are curable.

Even though ductal carcinoma in situ is noninvasive, it is imperative that women with the disease receive medical treatment because it can be a precursor of invasive cancer. Experts believe that 20 to 50% of women with DCIS will later develop an invasive breast cancer within 10 years of the DCIS diagnosis. The invasive cancer usually develops in the same breast and in the same quadrant of the breast that the DCIS first occurred.

In one day i gained 3 new doctors. The breast cancer doctor, The radiation oncologist, and the medical oncologist that will deal with my hormonal therapy since the cancer is estrogen and progesterone positive.

This week i get to meet my oncologist to set up the radiation treatments and get an MRI done of my breasts. I tend to be very claustrophobic so they are drugging me nicely for it. My oldest friend Cindy is taking me for the MRI and for my surgery. We have been friends since 5th grade and she lost her mom to ovarian cancer a few years ago. Shes dead set on helping me through this and i’m glad she is. I don’t know how i would make it through this positively without people that care for me.

People i would have never thought to offer have stepped up to help me out, and some days its over whelming. I’m the person used to doing for others. It’s hard to let someone else do for me. I’m learning that people care and they all go about caring in different ways. I don’t mind being asked how i’m doing, but when the same person thinks to call me daily and ask it, i’m grateful, but i get annoyed as well. I mean understand this, I have those days, especially right now before surgery, i just want a day to be breast cancer free and not think about it. I don’t think feeling like that is a bad thing because soon enough i’m going to be waking up to a scar on my breast and radiation daily. Right now i feel fine. I’m healthy. Only the Mammogram found the cancer, so its not like its affecting me physically yet. I’m full of energy, i’m not depressed, and im still whole.  I know that days will come when i may be feeling differently and i’m trying to plan ahead for all those situations. Im reading the book Just get me through this by Deborah A. Cohen

It came in my Baskets of Care from http://www.basketsofcare.org/basketofcare.asp

I’ve talked to the founder of Baskets of Care Gail Cooper and we are meeting for coffee thursday. :) She’s a 2 year survivor and i’m really glad i get to meet her and talk to her. I am planning on doing a fund raiser for them after my treatment is finished. I really want to give back to those that are helping women with breast cancer.

Ok guys and girls, Next Boobie Wednesday is my Lumpectomy so Boobie Wednesdays go to gal @wookiesgirl will be filling my shoes.
